Five words worth knowing

Equity
Ownership in a company, usually held as shares. Owning 1% of the shares means owning 1% of the company.
Valuation
The price a company is agreed to be worth at a point in time. In private companies it is negotiated, not measured, and can change sharply.
Dilution
When a company issues new shares, existing shareholders own a smaller percentage.
Secondary
Buying or selling existing shares from a current shareholder, rather than new shares from the company.
Illiquid
Hard to sell quickly. Private investments often cannot be sold for many years.
